Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley Book Review

This is another wonderful science Fiction classic. It is a critique to modern science. When Frankenstein was making his monster he was consumed with his work. He was so obsessed that he never asked himself whether he should make his monster. The problem was that he liked working with larger parts. Had he made something that looked remotely human, then perhaps things would not have ended so badly. I did not understand why he did this.

However, when you consider the Manhattan project, you will realize that scientist always want to outdo themselves. Those men where not content with making a weapon. They wanted to make THE Ultimate weapon. After the prototype proved successful, the FAT BOY follow. Needless to say, in WWII Albert Einstein and his friends made a mess of Japan. They created a monster of a Weapon that can literary Wipe all life off the face of the Earth.

As for Frankenstein, his monster was the testament of his own ego. He wanted to surpass God, and make something better, large than life. The tragedy of the book is that he succeeded. His monster also represents what has become of men. With the rise of science, it almost seems to us that our creator has abandon us. I can honestly say, that without the guidance of our creator, we become monsters. I suppose that in a way we are all monster. We have been twisted , our morals discard, in order to survive in this cruel, cruel world.

This book also critiques beauty. It shows us how vain we truly are. We pretend to care about the inside of others. However, the reality is that we only feel easy next to those we consider beautiful. The monster, like the noble savage, started pure and good. However, after dealing with humans he turned his back on them. He began to treat them with the same hate and disgust that humanity had showed him. Had the humans shown kindness to the Monster, Frankenstein's monster might have become good. Alas, we humans are such vain creatures.

I realized that Frankenstein is still very popular. When one looks up the name Frankenstein, we get the monster. Well, the monster, was quite pitiful. It was written in a way for you to feel pity for the monster. During the romanticist period, a change occurred in the writing pattern. In the old days, the storyline was straight forward. It was a prime citizen fighting some evil guy. Now, who is good and who is bad is not so straight forward.

Part of that new trend, was showing empathy for monsters.  Fausto, The Phantom of the Opera , Dracula, Camilla , Hester Prim , and Quasimodo are all from the same Romanticist School. The object is to show pity for the monster, the outcast of society. It also is meant to critique the judges of these monsters. In any case, this book did its job really well. Now, we all feel bad for the monster. There are some movies that Frankenstein is more of a monster, than his monster. They even given the monster the woman he so desired. What is different is that the monster from the book knew Plato, and Tacitus. The one from pop culture can barely speak. In any case, Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley deserves 5 star rating.
