English: The pirate Song
Ten cannons side to side,
wind strong, full sails ahead,
not slicing the ocean, but flying
comes soaring a winged bergantin.
Here comes the pirate called,
for his bravery,Chilling,
known throughout the sea
from East to West.
The moon reigns oversea,
on the mount weeps the wind,
and with a motion it raises
waves of blue and silver;
and behold the pirate king,
by the helm he gayly sings,
On one side Asia, on the other Europe,
and before him, Istanbul.
" Ride forth, my ship,
without fear,
no enemy, my ship,
no storm,no bonanza
will dare change your course,
nor restrain your valor.
And when the thunder
is violently roaring,
and the wind
Overpowering,
I sleep,
peacefully,
rocked
by the sea.
What is my treasure but my ship,
Who is my God but liberty,
my law, my force and the wind,
my only homeland, the sea.
Over there fearsome war
are raged by blind kings
for a piece of land;
as for me all I have
is bellow the sea,
were no laws exists.
And there are no beaches,
regardless of any,
no flag
of splendor,
that does not feel
my right
and does not respect
my valor.
What is my treasure but my ship, Who is my God but liberty, my law, my force and the wind, my only homeland, the sea.
At the sound of " a ship is coming"
you should see
how it stops and turns
in order to flee,
For I am the Sea King
and my fury is to be feared.
During loots
I divide
what I find
equally;
I only desire
for riches
a beauty
without rival.
What is my treasure but my ship, Who is my God but liberty, my law, my force and the wind, my only homeland, the sea.
I am sentenced to death!
I laugh,
lady luck has not left.
To the man who condemns me
I shall hang him,
perhaps in my own ship.
And if I fall,
what is life?
If lost,
I gave it up,
the day
I broke
the chains,
of slavery.

My music is better
than the north wind,
the crash and tremor
of the cables trembling,
swept by the dark oceans.
and my roaring canons.
And when the thunder is violently roaring, and the wind Overpowering, I sleep, peacefully, rocked by the sea. What is my treasure but my ship, Who is my God but liberty, my law, my force and the wind, my only homeland, the sea.

When I translated this poem, I threw Shakespeare out the window. Everyone wants to
be Shakespeare. However,there can be only one!! I read the official English
translation and it bore no semblance to the true pirate song. For this reason,
I took care to translate it in a way that the true meaning is not lost.
In any case, this poem is about a brave pirate king. He is bragging about his
might and his ship. He fears nothing but all fear him. The poem is pretty easy
to follow. Nothing too complicated. The only complicated thing about this poem
is the official English translation. In any case, this Pirate Song by Espronceda
deserves 5 star rating. Enjoy!!

ReplyDeleteGreat translation but your description of what the poem is about is completly off. He isn't bragging. The is a Romantic poem meant to point out that government is bad and man should be free to rule himself.
ReplyDeleteRespectfully disagree, the captain has every right to be proud and strong because he is free, his strength is in his ship and his crew. He is not lecturing us, he is simply free. The writer is not interested in lecturing us, because even the mere act of lecturing about freedom and ruling is a prison.

ReplyDeleteYou need to rethink your translation... you have not translated things properly, most of your work is good and accurate but other times... no. Example, second stanza, second verse: "on the mount weeps the wind". In Spanish: "en la lona gime el viento" means: "in the canvas the wind groans". This clarification totally changes the meaning of your translation.
