Confusion of Feelings Novella by Stefan Zweig
This is a proper title for this novella. It is truly one seriously messed up love triangle. The story is about a University professor who is secretly gay. One of his students, out of admiration goes to live up at his house. The student simply wants to help the professor finish his life's work. The professor has other ideas. He really likes his young student a lot. However, he is reluctant to share his feelings with the young man. In his experience, revealing his desires has brought him nothing, but misery.
The story does not end there. The professor has a pretty wife who loves him dearly. She knows his secret and regrets how things ended up. She finds the affection she seeks from the young student. The story just goes from bad to worse. It is one serious mess. The student respects the teacher, but loves the wife. The wife respects her husband, but loves the student. The professor loves the student, but respects his wife. They are each plagued by the secret guilt of their illicit desires. It is a real confusion of feelings. If it was me, I would just call it quits and have all jump in bed together. In any case, Stefan Zweig's "Confusion of Feelings" novella deserves 5 star rating.
