Conflict in Syria : Going from Bad to Worse
I have been looking from afar at the conflict of Syria. Recently, an event picked my interest. This cataclysm made Syria Phi Stars event worthy. Let us start from the beginning. From what I heard in the TV news and the BBC, the conflict began a year ago. Some teenagers had placed some revolutionary democratic slogans in their school. Like it was to be expected, Assad was not too humored by it. He made an example of the teenagers by torturing the poor boys. After that ill fated event, things went from bad to worse. Recently, when Assad saw the coming of the Arab spring, he started taking the rebels seriously. From time to time, he cuts the net to hamper the movements of the rebels who use the social media for communication.
However, the creme de la creme of his cruelty comes in the form of Anthrax and other classical chemical weapons. Assad is determine to stay in power by any means necessary. He will use any and all weapons at his disposal. Seeing this, the U.S. began to draw plans to enter Syria. Chemical Weapons are serious business. Now, let us think for a moment. Were did Assad's troops get such weapons?
Currently in the World, there are two major producers of Weapons. One is the US and the other is Russia. During the Cold War, the US used to hand its weapons like pancakes. Russia did the same thing. It was part of their proxy war methodology. They wanted to avoid fighting head to head because they were MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) for each other. When the Cold War ended, the US started to be a bit stingier with their goodies. However, the Russians lacked the capabilities to maintain their massive arsenal. Thus, to avoid having their weapons go to waste they began to sell them.
China is among the best costumers of the Russians. North Korea too purchases a lot of their Weapons. On the US side, to defeat the Soviet Union, they gave fancy toys to Iraq and Afghanistan. As a matter of fact, Iraq did use chemical weapons provided by the US in a war against Iran. That war was called Desert Storm. Geography wise, the most likely country to have provided Chemical weapons to Syria is Iraq. It is possible that Hezbollah moved their arsenal from Iraq to Syria.
Looking at the map, the chemical weapons of Assad might have been transported via the Euphrates. There is also a main road that goes from Syria to Iraq. I also heard of a book written by an Iraqi general. I think his name was Georges Sada. He explained how Saddam Hussein ordered his Iraqi Revolutionary Guard to move those weapons from Iraq to Syria. According to the guy, the troops used civilian airplanes whose chairs had been replaced by the Weapons. Thus, when the US came looking for the weapons, they found nothing. Its a wonder why the US never bothered to check not even one of those jets. This also explains how the US knew that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. They knew because the US had given him the Weapons. When he went rogue, it was natural that the US went to recover the weapons.
Now, back to Syria. Since the original owner of those weapons is dead, now there is no one keeping Assad from using those weapons. Seeing his empire crumbling around him, Assad desires to use them. Like it was to be expected, death threats coming from the US and the UN started to pour. They tell Assad that he will regret the day he was born if he dares to use those weapons. The US is still reluctant to get in there. Thus, they are training and arming the Lebanese on how to retrieve and dispose of the weapons. You see, disposing of Chemical Weapons is expensive. The US has already a great deficit. Thus, they are too cheap to clean up their own mess. Yet another Cold War anti Russian measure has come back to bite the US in their behind.
Well, there is no point in crying over spilled milk. It seemed like a good idea for the US in the 1980s. My only fear is that the Lebanese might decide to keep a few of those weapons for themselves. I am of the belief that if you want something done right, you should do it yourself. Plus, I really do not trust the Lebanese. From what I read in the newspapers, the Lebanese government has a Syrious problem. You get the joke, its a fusion of Syria and serious. Hehehehe... From what I read, their government still has many Syrian supporters in their Cabinet.
The US right now, is in the middle of restructuring the Lebanese government to make it more Democratic, in a pro western fashion. Such a process cannot happen overnight. On the meantime, the US is relying on them to take care of the Syrian problem. Frankly, I would rather ask the Turks for help, instead of the Lebanese. That place is still has too much turmoil, human rights violations, tortures, ect. To make matters worse, they still get Hezbollah suicide bombings and other tragedies from time to time. Lebanon is too unreliable for the work that the US is demanding of them.
If worse comes to worse, the US better brace itself to enter into yet another war in the Middle East. Let us hope that it does not come to that. Then again, geography wise, Lebanon is the logical choice. They are closets to all the Chemical Weapon labs in Syria. They are also strategically close to the capital of Syria, Damascus. For a base of operation, Lebanon works pretty well.
Now you have all the cards on the table. I really do think that Assad is already using those chemical weapons. That man has committed a lot of human rights violations. His government has been cruel and usual. Loosing power spells death at the hands of the rebels or in the court of law. For him, failure is not an option. Taking that into consideration, I do believe that Assad will use those Chemical Weapons. Frankly, I think the US should stop beating around the bushes (i.e. Lebanon) and just get in there. For better of for worse....
