The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene Book Review
The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene tells the story of a whiskey priest. This is the name given in Latin American to priest who has drinking problems. Plus, is the only name given to the main character. This story takes place in Mexico in the early 20th century. There is a communist revolution happening at the time. All priest who conform have been issued wives by the Party. It was the communist hope that by taking the celibacy from the priest, they would assimilate better to their system. This story gives you a good idea of how this Communist regime destroyed everything sacred. In addition to their misogynist practices against women. This regime systematically stripped people of spirituality, turning them to mere tools.
The whiskey priest has escaped from the communists. He is trying every way to resist the communist regime. However, he is only one man. He also has a terrible secret. Most of the book has the priest running away. A lot of people die in this book. This is one among the many historical novels of Graham Greene. He actually traveled to Mexico to study their society. Its a pretty accurate, depressing, depiction of Communist Mexico. Thus, if you are curious about this time period this is a good book to read. Plus, its a good read if you have nothing better to do. Phi Stars recommends this book. The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene deserves 5 star rating.
