Doomsday Meditations
Today while I waited for mother to pick me up from FIU, a strange fellow offered my brother and me a dooms day pamphlet. It said "the end of the world is almost here! HOLY GOD will bring judgment day on 10/1/ 2011. This got me thinking... damn we only have two months of fun remaining. These doomsday theories are as old as time itself. Israelite have been predicting doomsday ever since the whole messiah issue got into the picture. The first doomsday was supposed to occur in 500 BC, then 100 BC, then 120 AC, then 666 AC, then 1666 AC, then 2000 AC, 2012 AC and lastly 2015 AC.
I have shrunk the doomsday prophecies in of the roman times into 3 dates. Things had gotten pretty bad for the Jews in Rome. Their lust for independence had surmounted into a brutal killing of Romans by the Jews and vise versa . It is this terrible tension that prompted huge doomsday theories. Jews saw over the horizon the end of the roman empire. In doomsday the roman empire would fall and the messiah would come bla bla bla ect. the Apocalypse is a kabalist Gnostic work the predicted the fall of the Roman empire. Heck nero's grammatria number was 666. So, at least that dooms day prophecy came true. Rome fell and the "messiah" or pope took over the Roman Empire for 1500 years.
The other dooms day prophecies never came into fruition. It kept being put off further and further into the future. It seems, when things become terrible in the world people look at the end with hope. At this point humanity seems to desire that god or whatever comes and makes everything right with a magic wand. But if you ask me that is not going to happen. If I remember correctly, the bible says " they shall seek death and shall not find it" . So, if there is a god it seems unlikely that he will bring about doomsday to fix the mistakes of humanity.
This fact is supported by the fact that humans have free will. the more free will we have the less interference there is from god in human relations. So if there is going to be a doomsday it will be brought by humanity not God. but still you cannot blame humans from getting freaked out about 2012. Perhaps that is the day when Quetzalcoatl returns to earth with his ET pals. Or maybe a meteor will fall and kill off all humans in this date. Mayans were quite the notorious astronomers. So, perhaps there is a special comet that every 1000 years or so gets closer to earth. Maybe it will crash against the moon in 2012 and then all those pieces will fall on earth killing us all.
Regardless of whether the end comes from God or from space I am still a firm believer that the end will come because of humans. Let is take a moment to analyze the day the earth stood still. Here an ET wants to kill humanity to save earth. Humans have a firm beliefs that they have the right to do with all creation as they see fit. They see things for their usefulness and do not take a moment to think that Hello kitty has the right to exist just for being a cat. This utilitarian perspective is what's killing the earth lil by lil bit.
According to the Plan B: the millennium assessment, the end of the world will start in 2012 and it will reach its climax in 2015. The millennium assessment commission a number of scientist to investigate the state of all ecosystem and to predict their rate to degradation and its effects on the population that depends on them. They notice that the whole world is going to hell. Many strange viruses are appearing left and right because the fruit bat vectors that lived in the jungle had to move to city . These bats bite humans, these humans travels around and by the end of the day we get a super bizarre pandemic building up.
Heck, HIV was brought into the world by a stupid scientist and his monkeys. so as you see our quest to exploit the world's resources will be our own undying. Forget God , the devil, the Mayans or ETs. Humanity's problem is the humans themselves.
