Claymore

In the world of Claymore humanity is constantly being assailed by monsters known as Yoma. The origin of these demons is unknown to humans. All that is certain about them is that they are the enemy. In the graphic novel they seem to imply that Yoma are actually humans that turned to demons. It is for this reason that the Organization created human/yoma half breed warriors. the process of creating these warriors involves the putting the yoma essence into the human body. If they are strong, then the yoma blood does not kill them. those that survive the operation become what is known as a claymore. this name was given to these warriors by the commoners due to the giant claymore sword they carry in their backs. It is not the official name but it gives the common a name by which to refer to their saviors.

 

the reason why the common fear that claymore is because they have the potential to become fully yoma. once their yoma blood completely takes over the claymore becomes an awaken being. In this form, they become a more powerful type of Yoma. like the yoma they too feast on the guts of humans. Plus, they have the same purple blood and incredible healing capabilities. However, a blow to the head would kill both a Yoman and an awaken being (though there are some exceptions). Unlike the Yoma, the human mind  of the awaken Beings remains intact. The only thing that changes is the nature of their hearts. The Awaken beings no longer identify with humanity and thus feel no guilt at devouring them. Because of their human intellect they can think and plan and gather together to form pseudo armies.

In order to cover up the whole awaken being Claymore relationship, the Organization refers to them as voracious eaters. The cover up story states that the Awaken beings are actually really old and experienced Yoma that due to their old age have began to have a larger appetite. Visually speaking, Yomas come in human size. The awaken beings on the other hand are usually large gigantic monsters. they may appear to be human at first but by suppressing their Yoki aura. Some can even go as far as reverting to their pre claymore state.

In the current time scale of claymore, all the Claymore fighters are women. In  the past there used to be both male and female. However, male claymores where decommissioned because they kept awakening much too quickly. Thus, to save time and money the organization started producing only female models. Yes, I said, money. It seems that the claymore services are not for free. For all we know the organization could be producing both the cure (aka Claymores) and the malady (aka Yoma). But that is just my speculation. Needless to say, it is the fact that they are all women that the claymores have earned the name second name "silver eye witches".

These silver eyed witches are forbidden from killing humans. whoever breaks such a taboo is sentenced to death by the organization. Aside from having to deal with hatred and suspicions from the humans, Claymores must always keep their power in check to prevent their awakening. The irony is that without stirring up their yoma blood most claymores would not be able to battle. By releasing 10% their eyes turn golden, 30% and above distorts their face (making them more yoma like), and by releasing half their yoma blood their bodies start changing. Some claymores have managed to release almost all their yoma power while still keeping control of their bodies. However, these are few and rare instances.

In the next post I will discuss the plot. With the information i have given above you should be able to get the gist of the entire world of claymore. If you ask me it isn't a pretty place to live.
