Super Mario Bros. III Nintendo Game Review
I know that I should start with Super Mario I. However, Super Mario Bros. III was the first Super Mario Nintendo game I ever played. As a matter of fact, this was the first Nintendo game I ever played. When I was three, father argued with grandma between the purchase of a bike or a Nintendo. Gradma worried that I might get hurt while ridding the bike. Thus, we ended up with the Super Mario Bros. III. The irony is that Father ended up liking this game a bit too much. Most of the time he was the one playing and I the one watching. In those early days, he was the only one who could slay King Koopa. Whenever the final battle took place, bro and I used to go outside the house. We would watch the battle from the safety of the barred windows. It was a silly little game of ours. However, it helped to pass the time. Truly, I have very fond memories attached to this game.
I was not very good at playing this game in those early days. However, early on I mastered king Koopa's last castle. I could get to him in one piece regardless of whatever path I took. I remember that father was the first to discover the flutes. I am not certain how he figured it out. However, one day he made Mario hunch on top of the White block in the 3rd stage. This allowed him to pass through it all. He then went behind the ending black screen. This brought Mario to a hidden mushroom place where we got the flute from a box. Most of the times we just skipped right along to the last world. Thus, for most of the time I was familiar with the first world only.
From the first world, I liked a lot the fourth stage. It was a tough stage to bite down on. It was one of those that you have to keep jumping about or else Mario falls to his death. After father died, I played this game with my brother. I remember that I used to wake up as early as 5 AM to play the game. Sometimes, when I could not sleep I would just go to the living room and play Super Mario Bros. III. We only had one controller thus, it was Mario all the way.
My favorite world from this game is the 4th. It is the one with the giant versions of all the monsters. I am not certain why I liked the place. Perhaps, it had something to do with the music. The individual stages where really hard. Plus, the little boomerang throwing guys had gone jumbo. Most of the time, I got passed them with the music box or the cloud. That cloud got me out of a lot of scrapes. If worse came to worse I would use the wing P. I usually reserved that power for eventualities. In Super Mario Bros. III, the number one killer of Mario are the pits.
I remember that in this game there were a few weird things. In one of the bottom stages of the 5th world, there was a little green boot. This boot helped you get past the black bitter monsters. I also remember that one of the stages, above the clouds, there were some weird flying monsters. In the 4th world, one of the last stages had a weird black door. When you went in it, it made the monsters larger and then smaller after entering again. I also remember that odd things tended to show up at random times. When you did really well in a world a wild card game would appear. You just match the cards to get powers. Other times a shipped full of coins would appear.
Speaking of ships, those ships stages where really dangerous. You had to jump a lot. Most of these worlds are easily tamed with Wing P. Another ship that was problematic was the water ones from world 8th. Most of the time, I would just swim underwater to avoid the gun fires. You have try to stay afloat or else be sunk bellow. However, the creme de la creme was the last flying ship in world 8th. That one has the little flames and the surfaces eludes you too quickly. It is easy with the Wing P. However, you will not survive it without a raccoon form. I like the boss soundtrack of those ships. They were always really creepy. Overall, the soundtrack in the game was lovely. I like mostly the world songs of 4th and 6th.
Speaking of world 6th, that was my second favorite world. It was also hard as sin. However, what was of most importance was the hidden power in the place. Here is one of the few worlds where you can find the hammer throwing form of Mario. Super Mario Bros. III has most of the weird powers of Mario. In no other have I seen the Toad form, the Buddha raccoon or the Hammer Thrower. Those forms are really something else. As a matter of fact, King Kopa can be easily slain by the Hammer Thrower. Just 6 or 7 hits from those Hammer and he is a dead dragon. I don't like how they changed the names of King Koopa or Princess Toadstool. Those are classical names. Plus, its annoying the Toadstood ripoff for Luigi. The whole joke of the game was the love rivalry between the brothers. Only one brother can save the princess.
Before I finish, I would like to mention the bosses from World 3 and 7. Both had a great significance for me in my early life. I frankly liked the boss of world 3 because she was pink. As all you may not know, I like pink. Pink is not even a question. To make the fight harder I would fight her in the toad form. Obviously, Mario could not get very far in his toad form. Still, it gave me a laugh or two. As for the one in world 7th, I used to have the same terrible hairdo. I recently got it straightened. I am happy that I could share these few fond memories attached to this game. For this reason, Super Mario Bros. III is 5 star worthy.
