Romance de la luna, luna
A Conchita García Lorca
La luna vino a la fragua The Moon has entered the Forge
con su polisón de nardos. wearing a silvery white dress.
El niño la mira, mira. The child is watching her, watching her.
El niño la está mirando. The child is looking at her.
En el aire conmovido The wind is in turmoil
mueve la luna sus brazos as the moon rocks her arms
y enseña, lúbrica y pura, and shows, and lubricates her pure,
sus senos de duro estaño. white breast, hard as iron.
Huye luna, luna, luna. "Away with you, moon, moon, moon.
Si vinieran los gitanos, The gypsy are coming,
harían con tu corazón They will tear out your heart
collares y anillos blancos. and make white necklaces and rings. "
Niño, déjame que baile. Child, let me keep dancing.
Cuando vengan los gitanos, When the gypsies arrive,
te encontrarán sobre el yunque They will find you in the forge
con los ojillos cerrados. with your eyes closed.
Huye luna, luna, luna, Run away, moon, moon, moon ,
que ya siento sus caballos. I already feel their horses.
Niño, déjame, no pises Child, let me be, do not step
mi blancor almidonado. on the edges of my white skirt.
El jinete se acercaba The rider approaches
tocando el tambor del llano. sounding the valley's drum.
Dentro de la fragua el niño, Inside the forge lies the child,
tiene los ojos cerrados. he has his eyes closed.
Por el olivar venían, Down the olive groves they come,
bronce y sueño, los gitanos. The gypsies of bronze and dream.
Las cabezas levantadas They have their heads up
y los ojos entornados. and their eyes in anger.
Cómo canta la zumaya, My, how the zitzyfly sings,
¡ay, cómo canta en el árbol! My, how the tree sings!
Por el cielo va la luna Above the sky there goes the moon
con un niño de la mano. leading the child by the arm.
Dentro de la fragua lloran, Inside the forge they cry,
dando gritos, los gitanos. the gypsies are screaming.
El aire la vela, vela. The wind is watching, watching.
El aire la está velando. The wind is watching her.
Romance de la luna, luna by Federico Garcia Lorca Review
Today, I wanted to try something different. You have read my poems... I hope. Now, I will translate for you one of my favorite poem. I will then rate it. Basically, this poem is about a boy that is dying. Lorca uses the moon as the female personification of death. A lot of children die in the outdoors. It seems that this gypsy boy was lost in the forest. He was hiding from death inside a forge he discovered. Fever struck and he started watching the moon approaching. The repetition of luna, luna shows that he is delirious. He is trying to keep the moon at bay. The gypsy clan has almost discovered the boy. However, it is too late. The moon or death has taken the boy. The poem ends with the gypsies' crying for their lost child. The wind meanwhile is watching the passing of the moon or death. Death, like the wind sweeps over us quickly. This poem in specific is one of his many gypsy poems. He liked the gypsy clan of Andaluzia. He always felt akin to them. He admired their sense of freedom. In, any case, this lovely poem deserves 5 star rating.
