I really don't know how I let this holiday pass me by but it appears that in japan on may third its when HinaMatsuri or girl's day is celebrated. So what is girl's day? Well girl's day, white day and valentine's day are actually related. do you remember in code geass when they where celebrating the crown the school king ceremony where they traded hats.
Yea he does say female bodies are meaningless.... its kind of a strange line still things like these happen on valentine's day in japan, where the girl tells the guys that they love him. They also exchange chocolates and that sort of stuff but with anime you have to go the extra mile to make them seem insane. still a month from then, on may thrid comes girl's day or doll house day and a month from then comes white day where its the guy's turn to , after thinking it over really carefully, are suppose to respond to the girls' affections. See girl's day sort of falls in between the two. First the girls seeks a husband, then the family celebrates that the girl is growing, and afterward the husband comes.
Back in the days of Nobunaga it was believed that dolls could contain spirits just like the hindu gods. The story goes that during this day mothers would put dolls on small floats and set them on the river to drive away misfortune. The tradition stop cus the dolls kept breaking the fisherman's engines and it caused a huge problem latter on.
During Hinamatsuri people get together and bring shirozake, a sake made with fermented rise that tastes like bitter lizard spit, i cant imagine why would someone drink something so awful, But then again i'm not much of a drinker. chirashizushi or sakura mochi are also popular sweet foods that are made for the girls to much on.
Now about the creepy looking dolls. they're displayed around the house in at most seven stands in a pagoda fashion. Although it all depends on the families ability to afford the dolls. The first two are the emperors dairi-bina and Odairi-sama. they're placed with gold on their background to symbolize the power of the emperor. well each tear has its own agenda i wont bore you with the details, I'll be sure to write up a wiki with more info on the subject for those who want to know more. Well hopefully now you know a little bit more about Japanese culture.
