Nightwish Band Review
Nightwish is a metal band from Finland. They have an air for
the theatrical. Then again, their genre of music is defined as symphonic metal.
Among their most infamous songs is the
metal version of the Phantom of the Opera. However, it was their first single, “Carpenter”,
which helped paved the way for Nightwish’s world fame. Let see, Nightwish was formed by the song
writer/guitarist Tuomas Lauri Johannes Holopainen and vocalist Tarja
Turunen. Tarja was with the band for
most of the time. She was the one who sang Carpenter and the Phantom of the
Opera.
I do remember there was a different singer for Nightwish’s “
Amarath”. Anette Olzon was the one who sang this song for Nightwish. Anette is
the replacement for Tarja. Tarja left the band because her husband (and
manager) hated Holopainen’s guts. She is now doing her own thing. Ok, back to Nightwish.
There is a slight different between
Anette and Tarja voices. Tarja’s voice is more opera like. It blended better
with the original concept of Nightwish.
Anette has more of a pop singer voice. Still, her “Amarath” did earn the
Nightwish band quite the load of money. “ Amarath” was the single for Dark Passion Play album. It sold about 2 million copies.
Last year, in 2011, Nightwish published Imaginaerum. This is their seventh studio album. Holopainen said
that he was going for death bed reminiscence thing. Basically, there is this
old geezer/composer who is dying. Imaginaerum’s
songs are the memories of the old man. As you can see, Holopainen puts a lot of
thought into everything he makes. It’s
such a pity that his first album only sold 500 copies. The limited edition Angels Fall First was originally demo. It
was not commercially successful at first. However, Angels Fall First helped open the door for Nightwish. Holopainen admitted that those first songs
made him a bit nostalgic. If you think
about it, Imaginaerum concept is
closely linked to Holopainen’s nostalgia for Nightwish’s simple days. Thus, we
have the future tied to the past. That Holopainen really does have a poets’
heart. I think that’s a good overview of
Nightwish past and future exploits. In any case, Nightwish deserves 5 star rating.
