Jose Maria Bravo "The Beast Must not Be Born" Short Story Review
This is a short story that I read a long time ago. There is a different version of this story. However, it is about a teen wolf in modern times. This one is a werewolf story in a traditional fashion. It takes place in the cold lands of Scandinavian. This is the land of beautiful fair maidens and strong burly red headed men. They did not have dark haired Roman looking men.
The story begins with a maiden escaping a Viking Raid. The soldiers have just finished butchering her family. As she escaped, one of soldiers spotted her. He was going to rape her, when raven black haired man saved her. Afterwards, they then made sweet love.
She was in shock for a while. She did no remember her adventure with the forest dweller. After the incident she made her way to her uncle's village. Her uncle figured that she was pregnant because one of the Vikings had done her harm. However, she died giving birth to a dark eyed , raven haired baby boy.
The village elder saw the child and he asked to have the baby killed. He knew that the forest dwellers of raven hair were werewolf. However, the uncle refused to believe it. He did not want to give way to superstition. He figured that perhaps the invaders where not Vikings but men of other lands.
With a word of warning, the elder left him an arrow with a silver tip. Should the baby become a werewolf the uncle was supposed to kill it with this arrow. That is just the gist of it. The rest of the story chronicles the life of the boy and his eventual transformation.
This short story is truly quite interesting and mysterious. Plus, there is a lot of blood and gore around the end. I recommend it. 5 star rating.
