Meditations on Yugioh (or Instant Puberty)
Despite the passage of time, I still like the Yugioh series a lot. It brings back a lot of memories. Yugioh was among the first anime shows that I watched as a child. You know, I tried getting into the other series but they were simply awful.
Yugioh GX takes place 10 years after Yami went off to Neverland. They thought to continue with the odd hovering spirit thing. On GX, they did not want to do the whole Yami thing again. They thought it was repetitive. Instead, we had the winged Kuriboh train crash. Sure, it was based on the guardian master concept of the Noah season. However, to base an entire anime show on a hoovering fur ball (and its pals) was a really, really, bad idea.
After this terrible disappointment, I decided never to watch the new Yugioh seasons. One Saturday, I watched the 5D version. It seems a mixture of Yugioh with some stupid race car show. Then again it might have been restricted to that terrible episode. The main guy reminded me an aweful lot of Seto Kaiba.
I realized that this was another train crash. It seems they were trying personalities and character arrangements at random. They refused to think this through. I mean most of the "new" character seemed to be taken copy paste from the wonderful originals. Ah... the new seasons where no fun at all.
Eventually, they felt like thinking and thus we have Yugioh Zexal. It seems like a return to the classics. A return to what works. They paired up a Yami like character (Astral the amnesiac ET) with a Joey like character. It worked pretty well. There is a lot more pressure in this series.
" If you loose I die" or so says Astral (imagine him giving this speech poltergeist style). "If you lose one of the number cards I start to die (and you will have to duel alone, alone. You will have to think for yourself, yourself. (which sucks cause you are a terrible duelist and an idiot))". The new one is truly magnificant and 5 star worthy; just like the original Yugioh (oh yeah, the guy up there is dark Astra. He shows up after they get all the number cards (sorry for the spoiler). Then Yuma becomes evil for a while).
I have a lot of fond memories about Yami ( I hate his Egyptian name Atem) and Yugi Moto. I remember in the first episode, Seto's reaction to Yugi's transformation. He grew like 5 inches and his voice became deep and aggressive. It was like "Instant Puberty". Seto was the only who ever reacted like a sane person in this anime show.
Seto always too things superficially. I remember when he told Yami, " I am going to force your hand! If you attack me; I fall off a cliff and Die!!!" Those where not his exact words , but if you strip the innocence out of the TV version you can sorta read the cruelty of the original graphic novel. Ah.. that Yami was wonderful, " Kaiba, I never walk away and I am not starting now!!'
Yugi literary had to force Yami back in line. On the surface, Yugi seemed to had experienced a bipolar moment. He went from passive to aggressive and back to passive. Its no wonder that Seto (the eternal skeptic) believed that Yugi and his gang of "cronies" were insane. Ah, Seto, my dear Seto, he was the only voice of reason in that anime.
After that incident, Yugi had to beg Yami to stop killing people. It took a Leviathan to stop the Pharaoh from Mind Crushing everyone he ran into. Seto was his first victim. He partitioned Seto's personality. He must have taken a big piece, because Seto's alter ego was fat as bloody sin. I guess he had a lot of evil inside of him.
Now onto Yami's body count: In a flashback, Yami totally killed a thief. He told him, " Pick a Card, any card". "Opps, wrong card, your going bye, bye". Mind crush!!! Mind Crush!!! Well, it was that lil act of sheer brutality (seriously magic against a non magic user is so not cool) won Tea's heart.
Lets see, the next infamous victim was Panic ( I could not find a screenshot of that episode so here is a gender swap of Yami and Yugi). You remember? That episode with the lovely soundtrack of " I'm not going to Panic, Panic". He totally was burned up by Yami. Well, Yami did not bother to save the guy. Then again, the fire was aimed at Yami. The fact that nothing was left of Panic shows that he was burned alive.
Speaking of being burned alive, I think Bandit Keith got some of that. He did try to burn Yugi while under Marik's mind control. I think he got out of the fire, but we never saw him again. I think that was an add on to make the show less violent. I bet Yami probably send Bandit Keith to the shadow realm when Yugi was not looking.
Lets see, there is evil Bakura versions 1-7. He just wouldn't die ,even after loosing his millennium ring. I can't blame him for hatting the Pharoeh. I do not buy the whole, " It was an evil village, filled with evil people that had to be slain to make the Millenium items". There were women and children in that village. Women and children are not vile.
What Daddy Pharaoh did was despicable. His punishment was too light (and possible an ad on). Considering Yami's humor, it would not surprise me if he mind crushed his old man. That scenario would have been more in tune with his violent personality. Yami ,in all essence, acted like a true king Egyptian God king.
Egyptian kings back then thought they were sons of the sun Gods. They had utter disdain for the slaves and commoners. They only got along with either the noblemen (or their close relatives, like cousins and uncles and sisters. Heck incest was pretty common back then) and the priests. It was not too uncommon for them to use "bit" excuses like "they are evil" to have their way. That's how the massacre of the firstborns of the Jewish kids took place.
So, you see the tragedy of the Bandit village is not new thing in Egypt. Plus, even if the guys where evil there was no need to kill women and children. Back then, it was the guys that went to war and stuff. It was women's duty to stay home and take care of the children. To lump them with the rest of the Bandits was so totally wrong.
I bet half of those maidens killed where there against their will. But does anyone mention that? No!! That was another historical inconsistency that rubbed me the wrong way. At least Yami behaved like a true Egyptian king most of the time, until he was tamed by Yugi. I guess it was a new experience for Yami to recieve "no" for an asnwer. After all, everything that a pharaoh does is "wonderful, sacred, perfect".
You know... I bet Yami Bakura was Jewish. How else could he keep getting out of the shadow realm? The ancient Israelite had a special hidden super Kabalist knowledge. So, perhaps, YHWH kept helping Bakura escape the shadow realm.
Lets see, aside from the victims of the Leviathan, we have Weevle Underwood. You remember? " Attack him again breaker" Yami barely escaped the train crash. Plus, Ironheart told him that (aside from Tea) there was no one else on the train. Just remember, that Weevle was never seen again. I bet Joey ditched Rex too after he lost his soul.
I think all the servants of dark Malik met a tragic end. Heck, some of two of the fell off the roof of a skyscrapers. All either were slain by Malik or died because of Yami. The big 5 also did not survive their encounter with Yami. Although, they did try hard to get back at Yami and Seto. It does not make sense that they survived.
After all, when the motherboard and the Local Disk Drives go bye bye, there is no turning back. Whatever data was saved is gone, out of here!! Seto knew, that's why he made no comment on Mokuba's kind idea of putting Noah into a different body. Still, its a major wonder that Seto has the tech skills to turn virtual boy into a real boy.
I guess they said that lil line to quiet down the computer illiterate audience. Everyone thinks that computers are magic. However, if you literary Burn your hard drive all the info is gone out of here. All the data in the internet is saved in the physical world inside mega-computers. One only need to destroy them physically to kill the internet.
You know... Noah, might be able to comeback (and the big 5) if they were backed up in the 5 backups of the internet. There are 5 super computers that regularly backup the internet. In the eventuality that a hacker goes berserk and destroys the internet, 3 of the 5 keys can reactivate the internet backup. Well, enough of that!!!
These are among the many thoughts that pass through mind as I think back on the Old Yugioh. It was truly the great 5 star worthy anime show. Thank you for listening to my ramblings. Good day and goodnight.
