UN Investigating UK’s Human Rights Violations
by Teresita Blanco
The UN visited the UK yesterday to investigate allegations of human rights violations. The UN also plans to send more investigators in the near future. Ian Duncan Smith has been reforming Britain’s welfare. These reforms greatly disadvantaged disabled people.
Previously, the UN was critiquing the UK for its bedroom tax. The Bedroom Tax taxes homeowners for under occupying bedrooms. This tax greatly affects disabled people and the elderly. According to the Department of Home and Pensions, 2,380 people died 6 weeks after the first welfare reform.
The welfare reform had suddenly labeled thousands fit for work. Without government pension, they were unable to afford much needed food and medication. The numbers have been increasing since 2011. These numbers had been suppressed for quite some time.
In the end, Information Commissioner concluded that the Department of Work and Pensions had no right to suppress the information. The Center for Welfare Reform’s research showed that the handicaps have been hit worse than any group by budget cuts.
