There is something seriously wrong with today's movies. For starters, the movies have no plot. They focus too much on visual effects. The film companies imagine that just because it looks cool, it will sell well. The pity is that they are partly right. Everything in Hollywood is just about making money. Today's directors are too afraid to take any risks. They have abandon storytelling for the sake of making money.
The innovation in movies are limited to special effects. Storyline has become more stylized. Directors no longer think outside the box. Think about it, why are there so many Super Hero movies? They focus on those films because they know that they always sell well. These men are too worried about future profits to risk experimenting. Heck, the only innovative films come from other countries.
Things would not be so bad, if there was even a hint of variety. Yet, we see the same kinds of movies played by the same actors. One rarely sees a new face in movie these days. It is always the same list of stars. They rarely give a chance to a young upstart from nowhere's ville.
Back when Hollywood was young, there was a lot of experimentation. The movies were cheap and thus there was a lot of room for improvisation. Genres of films had yet to be established. Movie tastes and age groups had yet to be defined. Needless to say, there were a lot of hybrid films. Titanic set a fearful precedent. It was the most expensive movie, ever made of its time. Since then, movie budgets grew to epic proportions. As a result, Hollywood started taking fewer risks.
Now, we have genres with fully defined plots and formats. A typical Arch-type is college comedies, like the Hangover. Then, we have the romantic comedies and the greedy thrillers. These categories did much to butcher the original comedies, romantic and thriller films. However, the films that have suffered the most are the horror movies.
In the old days, the horror movies had plots and character development. Now everything is about scaring you, grossing you out, dark shadows and flickering camera effects. There are some exceptions like the first Scary Movie and the Paranormal Effects. The pity is that after they became successful, the parts became a repetitive nightmare.
There is still some hope for movies. A perfect example are the Harry Potter films, the Hunger Games, Twilight (believe it or not), Avatar and other films based on books. Movies based on video games, like the Resident Evil series, also have potential. Lastly, there are the remakes of movie classic. These ancient classics can finally be seen like they were meant to be seen, thanks to technology. Not all hope is lost. Sadly, innovation must come from sources outside the movie industry.
