Ernest Normand Victorian Painter History Orientalism 1859–1923 Review
by Teresita Blanco
Today, I wanted to review the artwork of Ernest Normand. Normand was a Victorian painter. He specialized in oriental scenes. For some people his works were a bit iffy. They complained that the themes of some paintings were a bit explicit. Regardless, what I like best is the scenery. It is quite realistic. Now, let us review the first painting.
The first painting shows a Sultan leering at a slave. The maiden is a new slave. As thus, she is not used to her new life. She is trying vainly to hide her body from the Sultan. That painting critiques slavery. Aside from theme, the scenery is pretty realistic. It really looks like a Sultan's palace. The arabesque details on the throne works pretty well. Truly, this depressingly hot painting deserves 5 stars rating.
In this painting, a maiden is watching her kid play. She has a hooka beside her. Both their attires are the kind of things you see in palaces. Since they own the entire place, they can strut around dressed like that. Overall, this is a genre scene. It shows the normal day to day leisurely lifestyle of the palace. This lovely painting by Ernest Normand deserves 5 stars rating.
Like any regular painter, Normand did Greek paintings. In this scene, Pygmalion's Galatea is coming to life. Its cute how Galatea resembled the infamous Venus Sculpture. Pygmalion looks quite shocked. In any case, this Greek painting by Normand deserves 5 stars rating.
In this painting, we see the Pharaoh with all his slaves. It is interesting how all the slaves come from different regions. Close to the Pharaoh, we see his favorite slave. Before the palace, we see the river Nile. The scenery is historically accurate. In any case, this lovely painting by Ernest Norman deserves 5 stars rating.
In this painting, the Pharaoh is eying a white slave. White slaves were a rarity in those days. She probably was an European export, possibly from Greece. You can kinda tell that it is Egypt because of the floor decorations and the river Nile. In any case, this lovely oriental painting deserves 5 stars rating.
This painting is about searching for evil. Out of curiosity, Pandora opened the evil jug. The maiden has a regular Greek stand. Its cute how the silk ribbon is conveniently covering her body. This cute flowery window deserves 5 stars rating.
In this last painting, we see Pandora trying to escape from the evil that she released upon the world. If you think about it, most mythological stories are about how chicks screwed it up for everyone. Regardless, this is quite the beautiful Greek painting. Truly, Normand deserves 5 stars rating.
