Ash Ketchum is Psychotic
Ash Ketchum looks harmless on the surface. All we see is a young boy who wants to be a pokemon master. But deep down he is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Allow me to explain, based on the biographical information we got from the Pokemon show Ash Ketchum is the only son of Delia Ketchum. The identity of his father has always remained a mystery.
According to infamous psychoanalyst Lacan, a boy who has lived with his mother all his life has a great odds of becoming a psychopath. At a certain age, every normal child is supposed to separate from his mother. This allows him to developed language. This separation is created by the symbolic father. A symbolic father is a person, job or something that the mother desires other than her child. However, Delia Ketchum never created a proper distance between herself and her son. She was a stay at home mom. All her life revolved around Ash. For this reason, Ash believed that his mother loved him above all else.
This creates problems for children. Since he did not split from his mother at a proper time (i.e age 1), Ash does not process the world like regular people. His entire life is built around a single routine. This routine is becoming a pokemon master. Through this routine Ash appears to behave like a regular person. He chose this career because it made his mother happy. His sole motivation for becoming a pokemon master is to make his mother proud.
Do you folks remember psychosis? In this Alfred Hitchcock movie, the son killed his mother when she obtained a boyfriend. This sudden introduction of a symbolic father broke his routine (thus causing a psychotic episode). Now back to Ash Ketchum. Ash's symbolic father is Mr. Mime. This pokemon created the first separation between Ash and his mother. Time and time again, we saw in the anime show Ash jealous annoyance toward Mr Mime. He hated that mother payed more attention to a pokemon and not his son.
Ever since Mr. Mine came into the picture, Ash has been consumed more and more by his pokemon master routine. When was the last time he ever called home? Before Mr. Mime came into the picture, Ash used to call his mother daily. Now he goes farther and farther away from her. This physical distance that Ash created between himself and his mother is what is keeping her safe.
Through his routine, Ash is running away from his problems back home. It helps him cope with the reality that his mother desires someone other than himself. Should he stop his pokemon master quest (or should he break this routine), the first thing that Ash is going to do is grab a knife and stab his mama to death in the shower (like the psychosis movie). Afterwards, he will gut Mr. Mime.
You still have doubts that Ash is a psychopath? Well try this on for size. Another common factor among psychos is persecution complex. Ash is always thinking that Team Rocket is out to get him. I have not seen one episode were he does not face Jessy and James. They serve as an imaginary separation between himself and his mother. Thus, Ash is compelled to defeat Team Rocket because he thinks they stand in the way of his mother's happiness. He pours against them all of his hidden hatred toward Mr. Mime.
Obviously, all these symptoms do not appear in the surface. The ego does a great job to masquerade our true desires. Thus, Ash's ego has convinced him that he wants to become a pokemon because he wants to (while omitting the true reasons for his desire ). I can understand the appeal of a trainers' lifestyle for a psycho like Ash. Through this routine, Ash is able to recreate the relationship between himself and his mother. His pokemon are solely dependent on him. Through this routine he takes his mother's place. Like this, he takes is perception of reality wherever he goes. It is for this reason that he loves pikachu so much.
For Ash, Pikachu is himself. He takes care of Pikachu in the same way a mother looks after his son. He teaches him how to fight, he comforts Pikachu when it is sad ect.. Like a mother, he is never separated from his pokemon. Like this, he artificially maintains the bond with his mother. As you can see, Ash Ketchum is a psychopath. Should he fail as as a pokemon master most odds are that a tragedy will occur in Pallet Town.
.
Thank you for wasting 5 minutes of my life.
ReplyDeleteGet a life looser
DeleteI'm thinking that as the author of this article you need to get a life. Spending to much time thinking about how a cartoon would be in real life really significance that and not being able to spell loser.
Deletewell the blog is applying Lacan philosophy to a fictional character. Its an exercise we do in philosophy class. Everyone else did Dexter Morgan so I wanted a challenge and did Ash instead. this is the last time i'll reply. visit my site and leave as many rude comments as you want but dont get angry when you are paid with the same coin. If you have nothing nice to say....
DeleteI would pay to see that movie
