Children’s Costume by John Peacock Book Review
by Teresita Blanco
This historical book is great for illustrating children. Most fashion books focus on drawing grownups. However, children’s fashion is important. It is especially important for people who draw children’s book. Aside from the drawings, the book includes a short history of children’s fashion. Up until the 1800s, children were seen as mini adults.
Even noble children had to wear a corset. There was little regard for children’s anatomy or playtime. Things changed with the industrial revolution. The rich kids were finally allowed to act like children. The poor kids finally had something resembling leisure. In the 1800s, they developed baby clothing. Most of them were fancy dresses for the Baptism.
During that time, boys ages 1 to 6 wore the same dresses as girls. It was later on boys started getting their own clothing line. At the end of certain chapters, Peacock illustrates children’s accessories. The dresses in this book show children from the ages 1 through 12. These accessories are like shoes or hats. All these illustrations are in color. It’s quite the lovely book.
