Book Review of Laughter in the Dark by Nabokov Vladimir

A few week ago, I finished reading Laughter in the Dark. It is a novel written by Nabokov Vladimir. The book is kinda cynical and bit evil with its characters. Right off the bat, the beginning spoils the ending. Basically, Nabokov says that the book is about a guy who left his wife to chase after a chick that did not love him. In the end, he died because of the romance he had with that chick. On that note, Nabokov starts the book.

It is kinda evil how he messes with the reader. Very early, we know what is going to happen in the end. Still, one is left with the expectation as to how the girl caused the main character's death. Now, let us begin with a little bit of the plot. The main character is Albinus. He is a rich guy with too much free time.

Since he was small, Albinus wanted to experience an ultimate romance. However, all the lover girls he ever met were rather cold. Eventually, he got married to Elizabeth, his wife. At times, he thought she was the girl of his dreams. Most of the time, Elizabeth was warm and pleasant. According to Nabokov, Elizabeth was the kind of person who was simply content with existing.

The third wheel in the story is an opportunist named Margot. Since she was a little girl, she was always a pain. Eventually, her poor family got rid of her. One day, she met Albinus in the treather. For Albinus, it was love at first sight. For Margot, her relationship with Albinus felt to her as if she had won the lottery. Truly, she wanted to bleed him for all he was worth. Well, that is the gist of the first two chapters of the book. Like most of Nabokov's book, it goes from the beginning to the end of the character's life. Truly, Laughter in the Dark is a 5 stars worthy novel. I recommend it to all who love bad romances. I think it got made into a movie or something.
